ATHLETES OF THE MONTH – Wellenstein

At the end of each month, the head varsity coaches of teams that are competing will nominate an athlete from their respective sport to the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee(SAAC). At the next monthly meeting, the SAAC representatives will vote for one male and one female athlete of the month. The athlete of the month will be an individual who had great performances and/or success in their respective sport for that month.

Henry Wellenstein – SR – Track/Field

Wellenstein, a senior, is receiving his first Athlete of the Month for track and field this year.  He was a recipient of the award as a member of the cross country team.  In March for the indoor season, Wellenstein was a member of the 1st place 4x800m relay team at the Brown Deer Tri.  He then placed two times at the UW-Whitewater Classic.  First place in the 1600m run in a time of 4:31.05 (indoor best) and 5th place in the 800m run in a time of 2:05.27.  He concluded the month at the Madison West relays, where the team took second place for the second year in a row.  There he took 1st place in the 3200m run and retains the new school record, finishing the race in 9:36.59.  The previous record was set back in 1979 by Pat McGinn in 9:37.1.
