The Red Raider Harriers finished the season with a strong showing at the 2017 WIAA State Cross Country Championships. The Raiders scored 300 points to finish 10th out of the 20 teams that competed at the championship meet. Middleton won the meet with an impressive 76 points, Stevens Point was 2nd with 177, and South Milwaukee was 3rd with 191.
It was the first cold meet of the year (37 degrees), Henry Wellenstein and Jacob Odrzywolski led the team running the majority of the race together. Wellenstein ran 16:43.80 for 44th place while Odrzywolski ran 16:43.84 for 45th place. Max Finco finshed 91st in 17:06.94, Ian Tyre finished 124th in 17:20.43, and Nate Blischke finished 164th in 17:57.07
Matt Doberstein ran 18:05.82 for 171st and Liam Nicol ran 18:14.87 for 181st place.
The boys handled the situation with poise and delivered the best performance by the team since 1990 when they finished 10th out of 16 teams.
The boys stayed relaxed over the first half of the race which helped them negotiate the challenging 3rd mile of the course. We steadily moved up during the second mile then passed a combined total of 103 runners over the last 1.1 miles. At the mile we were in 18th place, then 17th by the 2 mile. It was a tight battle in the team scores, with only 18 points separating 9th to 16th place, that left very little room for error.
I am very proud of what these boys accomplished this season and am thankful that our seniors (Jacob, Ian, Matt) had the opportunity to compete at state and end their season in such a positive manner.
