The Tosa East boys varsity cross country team opened their season with a first place team finish at the Hale Mini Betz Invite with 27 points over Germantown (35) and Nicolet (72).
Arthur Wellenstein led wire to wire and claimed the individual win in 17:15 on the brand new Hale 5k course.
The success of the team is thanks to several newcomers this season that have added depth and helped close the gaps between the returners.
Aidan Matthai ran a PR 17:25 for 3rd place in his first high school cross country 5k race. He ran every step of the race next to his brother, Grant Matthai until the final sprint to the finish. Grant placed 5th in a PR 17:31.
Ryan Morita dedicated himself to training this summer and is now seeing the results of his consistency. Ryan finished 7th in a PR 17:49. This is his first PR in 2 years and his first time running in the 17s.
Newcomer Mason King ran his first 5k in a PR 18:08 for 11th place to be the final scorer and help the Red Raiders secure the team win.
Also running were Matthew Peura 18:41 (15th), and Steve Koss 18:45 (16th).
It’s a strong start to the 2020 season. We already have our top 5 significantly faster than at the end of the 2019 season.
Hale also hosted Slinger and Pewaukee on Saturday which Hale won by a close margin. Just for fun results were combined from both the Friday and Saturday sessions and Tosa East came out on top with 56 points over Hale 63, Slinger 65, Germantown 60, Pewaukee 116, and Nicolet 148
The team races next at Mitchell Park on September 12 when Brookfield Central hosts Tosa West, West Allis Hale, West Allis Central, and Tosa East.
