The Girls Track and Field team competed Wednesday night at West Allis Central in the GMC Indoor Conference meet. The ladies competed very well finishing fourth place as a team with 80 points. Behind only Brookfield Central 126 points; Brookfield East 116 points; and DSHA 90 points. We scored 5 more points than last year and moved up one spot and very well could have been 3rd. We are heading in the right direction!
All Conference performers have to finish with a third place or better, which is rewarded with a medal.
Starting off the competition for the Raiders, Junior Raven Moore thru a personal best in the shot put, 34 feet even. Raven’s throw put her in 5th, giving the team 4 points, which weren’t projected going into the meet!
Another field event was completed shortly after that, the pole vault. With two athletes in the field, Juniors Erin Lindemann and Amaya Ibanez-Baldor, we a good opportunity to add to the team total. Erin started off with vaulting a personal best height of 7 feet and placing 7th, which exceeded her seeded position! Amaya followed with a solid performance, reaching 8 feet and placing 5th respectively.
First final event on the track was our 4x800m relay team. Leading the team off was Melis Kaplan, followed by Olivia Bowser, then Rosie Rohrer and anchoring the team Eden Gissibl. The group competed hard and ran well, running a time of 11 minutes and 54 seconds, placing them 4th.
Defending her title in the 55m Hi Hurdles, Junior Brooklyn Blackburn smoked the competition. Running a meet record time of 8.54 seconds, winning by almost a half a second. With three 55m hurdle races and attempts at high jump within the first 45 minutes of the meet, Brooklyn managed to also place 5th in the high jump, surpassing the height of 4 feet 8 inches.
Next up on the track for the Raiders was the 4x240m relay, which is equivalent to the outdoor 4x200m relay. Sophomore Chandler Yow lead the team off, handing to Junior Kaia Garland, then to Sophomore Mara Zydek and anchoring was Freshman Maia Mays. The ladies ran very well, with Mays closing the gap nicely at the end just missing a third place finish by less than .2 seconds!
Senior, Hannah Brooks debuted on the track racing in the 400m dash. Hannah ran great, leaving her competition in the dust and running by herself for most of the race, only competing against the clock. Hannah ended up 5th, but her time of 1 minute 6 seconds was just off of 3rd and 4th place finishes, which were ran in a different heat.
In the 800m, Junior Elsa Klein ran to All-Conference honors. Klein took off in the lead from the gun, holding her position for 799 meters, just getting nipped at the line by a State quality runner from Brookfield Central. Elsa ran with confidence and our ‘No Fear’ mentality the whole race! Her time of 2 minutes 30 seconds was just .02 seconds from 1st place.
The freshman twins, Jetta and Maia Mays, had a great meet in their GMC Indoor debut. After racing to 5th in the 55m dash, Jetta took home All-Conference honors in the 200m dash placing 3rd with a time of 27.79. Maia, led her team to a 4th place finish in the relay earlier, and then ran very well in the 200m dash, placing 5th with a time of 28.51 respectively.
Lastly the 4x400m relay team of Brooklyn Blackburn, Hannah Brooks, Mara Zydek and Abby Wood ran a great race of 4 minutes and 25 seconds to bring home the gold. Ending the night with an All-Conference effort for those ladies was a great finish!
Other notable finishes in the top 8:
